AV Niche have now developed their latest software module, in conjunction with their partner XoVox Communications called DiscTranscriber, which is a PC based software application written for the specific task of transcribing audio information from CD or DVD recordings.

It requires a standard PC with a CDROM/DVD drive running the Microsoft Windows Operating System, and a standard footswitch and headphone set.

Once the typist/transcriptionist places a standard CD or DVD, which contains the recorded interview or evidence, into the drive on the workstation DiscTranscriber will automatically start and allow the user to listen to or view the recording. The playback is controlled using a standard transcription foot pedal familiar to the world of dictation transcription.

When either an audio recording (on CD) or a video recording (on DVD) is placed in the drive, the application will display an appropriate control window. Various methods are available for controlling the playback, depending on user preference and hardware availability.

DiscTranscriber can be configured, according to the type of document being produced, to provide useful information by using “hotkey's” from applications such as Microsoft Word. For example, the current time from the recording can be inserted into the document with a single keystroke when a person in the recording starts to speak, which will greatly improve productivity when transcribing recorded interviews.

Future versions will allow networked implementations with the audio/video streamed to the workstation from a central server location. AV Niche and its partner Xovox Communications already have similar file capture, indexing and workflow applications which allow corporate or force–wide implementations using other audio formats in a networked environment. DiscTranscriber is the perfect complement to the new AV Niche digital recording products for CD/DVD recorded interviews. The DiscTranscriber module is extremely cost-effective, by utilising existing PC hardware whch may
already be available on-site.
